After breakfast, head to Machame Gate to start your adventure. The trail begins in a lush rainforest teeming with unique flora and fauna, including colobus monkeys. After 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Machame Camp, where you’ll enjoy dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Machame Camp (3,010 m) – New Shira Camp (3,845 m)
Today’s trek begins with steeper terrain but offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain ranges. As the rainforest gives way to open moorlands, you’ll enjoy glimpses of Kibo Peak and the vast Shira Plateau. By mid-afternoon, you’ll reach New Shira Camp, perfectly positioned for breathtaking sunsets over the plains.
Day 4: New Shira Camp (3,845 m) – Lava Tower (4,640 m) – Barranco Camp (3,960 m)
This acclimatization day takes you to higher altitudes before descending to camp. Begin your trek across the Shira Plateau, eventually reaching the Lava Tower, where you’ll pause for lunch and adjust to the higher altitude. As you descend into the lush Barranco Valley, the scenery transforms with unique vegetation such as giant senecios. After 6 to 7 hours of trekking, arrive at Barranco Camp for the night.
Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960 m) – Barafu Camp (4,640 m)
Your day begins with the thrilling climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent with spectacular views. Traverse ridges and valleys as you make your way toward the Karanga Valley, where you’ll stop for lunch. Afterward, continue to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Rest and prepare for the exciting climb ahead.
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,640 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp (3,080 m)
Summit day begins at midnight with a challenging climb under the stars. Using headlamps to light your way, you’ll trek through loose scree toward Stella Point (5,730 m) on the crater rim. After a brief rest, continue for another 1 to 2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your accomplishment with incredible sunrise views before descending back to Barafu Camp for a short rest. Continue your descent to Mweka Camp, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,080 m) – Mweka Gate (1,630 m) – Arusha
After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll bid farewell to your mountain crew. A driver will take you back to Meru View Lodge, where you can enjoy a well-earned shower, a refreshing swim, and a celebratory dinner. Relax and reflect on your incredible journey.
